Your domain name is a BIG decision!
It’s important to get the right domain name, it’s your address on the web!
If you have a unique business name there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get the name you want – but with so many domains already registered it can sometimes be difficult to get the one you want.
If your business name isn’t available, try shortening the name slightly or moving the words around… or even think out of the box.
We’ve got some tips for choosing a domain below!
Choosing a domain
The best domain Names
When choosing a domain think about the ones you find easy to remember. They are usually unique and short.
If your business name is taken, think about what you do and where you are. if ‘myplumbingbusiness.co.uk’ isn’t available how about ‘speedyplumber.co.uk’ or ‘dorsetplumber.co.uk’.
Remember, if it’s going on the side of a van it needs to be easy to remember and short!
What type of domain name?
Domain names come different endings, like .co.uk or .com
These are called domain extensions and the one you go for depends on your type of business.
we strongly recommend .co.uk for small UK-based local businesses – they’re cheaper and it instantly tells Google and your customers you are a UK company!
You may be tempted by a .com domain, and that’s fine but they are more suited to US or international businesses and they cost more too.
There are lots of other domains types from .shop, to .cafe or .photographer but these are all more expensive.
Ultimately it’s your choice and you can register as many as you want. Our domain finder will allow you to search all the different types.
Keep it short
Easy to remember
If possible make it relevant
Use your name with your profession
One for sole traders, customer will remember your name next time they are searching
Consider adding your location
Instead of JohhSmithElectrical.co.uk consider JSElectricalBristol.co.uk
Think out of the box
B&Q uses diy.com – still relevant and very easy to remember
Don't add numbers
Numbers in a domain name can be confusing, unless they are part of your business name – don’t use them.
Check the spelling!
Double check your spelling – once a domain name is registered it can’t be undone or cancelled until it expires.
